Bear was born in December of 2015 and was adopted from a humane society in Arizona by a young couple while living on a military base. The couple were told that he was a German shepherd mix, but Bear appears to be more lab and heeler mix. Bear was microchipped at the time of adoption by the humane society, and the chip can be re-registered.  He is medium-sized (about 51 pounds), about six years old, and friendly.  He came in with a favorite toy and ARF was told that he loves to play ball. He has been with young children in his home, but his former owner says he doesn't respect personal boundaries. (That probably means that he played hard and knocked the children down!) Bear also lived with two very small dogs and was good with them, was even crated with them, and was actually somewhat protective of them.  He seemed, though, to be a pig at the food bowl, possibly with some guarding, so he has been fed separately since coming to ARF on 9/3/21.  Bear had been previously neutered, but ARF updated all other vetting.  He saw the vet on 9/17/21 at which time he received his first DHPP shot with a second three weeks later.  He was feeling a little stressed at first at being uprooted from his home but is doing better now.  He growled when the vet tried to take his temperature and was muzzled as a precaution, but the process continued and he cooperated. Bear's 4DX was negative for any tick-borne illnesses, but his fecal tested positive for hook worms.  He received Nexgard and drontal on 9/18/21 (with a second drontal two weeks later).  Bear is a handsome guy who has had to transition from the home he had known since a puppy.  After a while in boarding, Bear was moved to the local shelter so that he could be further assessed and get walks from volunteers on the hiking trail.  The volunteers report that he walks well on a leash and that he doesn't react to other dogs when walking. He keeps a clean kennel, too. He may need further assessment when food is involved, but he is not reactive to other dogs in a normal setting. His former owner reported that loud noises frighten him, so he might need a little encouragement when frightened. Bear likes attention, seems smart, and would likely adjust and train well with some encouragement, repetition, and good treats!-------------------------------------
